Ins & Outs: The Child

The preaching of Jesus rebukes us. Jesus tells us that the way we have seen and evaluated things is all wrong---that what looks to us to be important, isn’t; what seems great, isn’t; what feels eternal, isn’t; that what seems inconsequential and insignificant is incredibly central, that what appears weak and useless is highly valued, that what we count as small heaven counts as cherished. And that’s why when Jesus’ students asked him about greatness in his kingdom, he set in front of them a child and said: “This.”
