What makes it tricky is that Jephthah is the one upon whom “the Spirit of the LORD came.” What do we make of the reality that this Spirit-endowed man kills his unnamed daughter, and does it in the name of the LORD? We read the Bible hoping to get some inspiration, to hear some word from God---so what are we supposed to hear in the story of Jephthah, mighty and Spirit-ed warrior, and his daughter, an unnamed victim?
